Absalom Jones, activist and leader in the Black Pioneer period, died in Philadelphia, PA, on this date in 1818.

Henry Highland Garnet, activist, Presbyterian minister, diplomat, and abolitionist, died in Monrovia, Liberia, on this date in 1882. In 1843, Garnet called for a slave revolt and general slave strike at the National Black Convention in Buffalo, NY.

Andrew "Rube" Foster organized the National Association of Professional Baseball Clubs (Negro League), the first black baseball league, on this date in 1920.

The Renaissance, the first black pro basketball team, was organized on this date in 1923.

Joseph L. Searles, III began training as a floor partner with Newburger, Loeb, and Co. on this date in 1970. Searles was the first black person on the New York Stock Exchange.
